Using your Claris® Software Express Updater - FileMaker® Pro Server 3.0v2
Overview
Thank you for investing in Claris software. From time to time, we produce maintenance releases of our software — we’ll add minor functionality, correct defects, or respond to customer requests. We’d like to make it as convenient as possible for you to obtain these new versions and enjoy their benefits.
Updates, in contrast to upgrades, contain few changes from the previous version. Instead of distributing the full, revised application, we can provide just the files necessary to incorporate the new functionality and fixes. When you run the accompanying Updater, it will combine your original FileMaker Pro Server 3.0v1 with the new changes to create a new application, FileMaker Pro Server version 3.0v2.
This document describes the steps you take to apply the update. You may want to print it out if this is the first update you’ve installed. A separate “Release Notes” file describes the changes and corrections we made in the new version of FileMaker Pro Server.
FileMaker Pro Server 3.0v2 Updater will upgrade U.S. version 3.0v1 to the current U.S. release, 3.0v2. This Updater WILL NOT work on versions 2.1 or earlier of FileMaker Pro Server and WILL NOT update any international versions of FileMaker Pro Server.
This update package consists of four components: an application updater for the FileMaker Pro Server application, a folder containing the MacIPX 1.3.1 extensions and control panel, a Release Notes document, and this Read Me.
Technical Considerations
Hard Disk Space:
You’ll need enough room for both the original application and the new version (approximately 1 MB of disk space for both).
Virus Detection Software:
The Updater makes several changes to the resources in FileMaker Pro Server. Many virus utilities consider this activity improper and may try to prevent it. To avoid this inconvenience, disable all virus detection software before applying the update.
Desktop Corruption Problems:
If on running the updater other miscellaneous folders/files have question marks beside them in the update dialog, try rebuilding the desktop file by restarting the computer while pressing the option and command (apple) keys simultaneously. Continue pressing these two keys during the startup process until a dialog appears asking if you want to rebuild the desktop. Click OK, and release the two keys.
How to use the application updater:
1. Quit FileMaker Pro Server, if you’re using it.
2. Double-click the FileMaker Pro Server 3.0v2 Updater which you have copied to your local drive.
3. In the Updater dialog box, select your original FileMaker Pro Server application from the list of files and click Update. The Updater always leaves your original program untouched, in case something goes wrong with the installation.
4. The update should take less than five minutes. You see a message confirming successful installation of the new version, or an indication of what went wrong.
5. Click OK. Quit the Updater. You can now open the new version of FileMaker Pro Server to verify the update was successful. When you are satisfied with the result, delete the original application.
6. To update to the latest MacIPX files (version 1.3.1), you need to first open the MacIPX Files folder. This folder contains two additional folders: MacIPX Control Panel and MacIPX Extensions. The contents of these folders need to be dragged to the correct folders in the System Folder:
– Open the MacIPX Control Panel folder and drag the MacIPX file to the Control Panels folder located in the System Folder.
– Open the MacIPX Extensions folder and drag the three files to the Extensions folder located in the System Folder.

The enclosed computer program is an update (the “Update”) to FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 (the “Software”). In order to use and/or copy the Update as authorized by this License, you must have validly licensed at least one copy of the Software. You are required to have a validly licensed copy of the Software for each copy of the Update made hereunder. The Update and the copies authorized herein replace your validly licensed copies of the Software and are not additional copies (i.e., you may not use the Update in addition to the Software the Update is replacing).
The Update is licensed, not sold, to you by Claris Corporation (“Claris”) for use only under the terms of this License, and Claris reserves any rights not expressly granted to you. You own the disk(s) on which the Update is recorded or fixed, but Claris and its licensers retain ownership of the Update itself.
1. License. This License allows you to (i) make copies of the Update, only up to the number of validly licensed copies of the Software in your possession and (ii) use each such authorized copy on a single computer at a time. You are required to have a validly licensed copy of the Software for each copy of the Update made hereunder. The Update and the copies authorized herein replace your validly licensed copies of the Software and are not additional copies. To “use” the Update means that the Update is either loaded in the temporary memory (i.e., RAM) of a computer or installed on the permanent memory of a computer (i.e., hard disk, CD ROM, etc.). You may use at one time as many copies of the Update as you have licenses for. You may install the Update on a common storage device shared by multiple computers, provided that if you have more computers having access to the common storage device than the number of licensed copies of the Update, you must have some software mechanism which locks-out any concurrent users in excess of the number of licensed copies of the Update (an additional License is not needed for the one copy of the Update stored on the common storage device accessed by multiple computers). If the Update is installed on the permanent memory of a single desktop computer (i.e., not a storage device shared by multiple computers) and that desktop computer is used by one individual for at least 80% of the time the computer is in use, that same individual may also use a copy of the Update on a portable or home computer.
The Update is protected by copyright law. As an express condition of this License, you must reproduce on each copy the Claris copyright notice and any other proprietary legends that were on the original copy supplied by Claris.
You may permanently transfer all your rights under this License to another party by providing to such party all copies of the Update licensed under this License, and the Software the Update replaces, together with a copy of this License and all written materials accompanying the Update, provided that the other party reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License.
2. Restrictions. The Update contains trade secrets in its human perceivable form and, to protect them, you may not REVERSE ENGINEER, DECOMPILE, DISASSEMBLE, OR OTHERWISE REDUCE THE UPDATE TO ANY HUMAN PERCEIVABLE FORM. YOU MAY NOT MODIFY, ADAPT, TRANSLATE, RENT, LEASE, LOAN, RESELL FOR PROFIT, OR CREATE DERIVATIVE WORKS BASED UPON THE UPDATE OR ANY PART THEREOF.
3. Termination. This License is effective until terminated. This License will terminate immediately without notice from Claris or judicial resolution if you fail to comply with any provision of this License. Upon such termination you must destroy the Update, all accompanying written materials, and all copies thereof. You may also terminate this License at any time by destroying the Update, all accompanying written materials and all copies thereof.
4. Export Law Assurances. You agree that neither the Update nor any direct product thereof is being or will be shipped, transferred or reexported, directly or indirectly, into any country prohibited by the United States Export Administration Act and the regulations thereunder or will be used for any purpose prohibited by the Act.
5. Limited Warranty and Disclaimer, Limitation of Remedies and Damages. YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE UPDATE MAY NOT SATISFY ALL YOUR REQUIREMENTS OR BE FREE FROM DEFECTS. CLARIS WARRANTS THE DISKETTES ON WHICH THE UPDATE IS RECORDED TO BE FREE FROM DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP UNDER NORMAL USE FOR 90 DAYS FROM PURCHASE, BUT THE UPDATE AND ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS ARE LICENSED "AS IS." ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS (INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE) ARE DISCLAIMED AS TO THE UPDATE AND ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS AND LIMITED TO 90 DAYS AS TO THE DISKETTES. YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR BREACH OF WARRANTY WILL BE THE REPLACEMENT OF THE DISKETTES OR REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE. IN NO EVENT WILL CLARIS OR ITS DEVELOPERS, DIRECTORS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES OR AFFILIATES BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL OR INDIRECT DAMAGES (INCLUDING DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION, AND THE LIKE), WHETHER FORESEEABLE OR UNFORESEEABLE, ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE UPDATE OR ACCOMPANYING WRITTEN MATERIALS, REGARDLESS OF THE BASIS OF THE CLAIM AND EVEN IF CLARIS OR AN AUTHORIZED CLARIS REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
Claris' liability to you for actual damages for any cause whatsoever, and regardless of the form of the action, will be limited to the greater of $500 or the money paid for the Update that caused the damages.
THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS WILL NOT APPLY IN CASE OF PERSONAL INJURY ONLY WHERE AND TO THE EXTENT THAT APPLICABLE LAW REQUIRES SUCH LIABILITY. BECAUSE SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR LIABILITY FOR CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES, THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
6. General. This License will be construed under the laws of the State of California, except for that body of law dealing with conflicts of law. If any provision of this License shall be held by a court of competent jurisdiction to be contrary to law, that provision will be enforced to the maximum extent permissible, and the remaining provisions of this License will remain in full force and effect. If the Software or Update is supplied to the United States Government, it is classified as "restricted computer software" as defined in clause 52.227-19 of the FAR. The United States Government's rights to the Software and Update are as provided in clause 52.227-19 of the FAR.
